How to Calculate BMI Correctly
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple height-to-weight ratio used to classify underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity in adults. While it's not a direct measure of body fat, it correlates strongly with metabolic disease risk.
The Formula
The basic formula is Weight (kg) / Height (m)².
For example, if you weigh 70 kg and your height is 1.75 meters:
70 / (1.75 * 1.75) = 22.86
BMI Categories
- Underweight: Below 18.5
- Normal weight: 18.5 - 24.9
- Overweight: 25.0 - 29.9
- Obesity: 30.0 and above
Why BMI Matters
Maintaining a normal BMI reduces the risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. However, athletes with high muscle mass might have a high BMI without having excess body fat.
